I just found this hilarious. I'm pretty sure the captain was drunk and got close to shore for some stupid reason like someone wanting to wave at someone. And then when it did crash, he abandoned ship with no care for the passengers and was caught out on it. It's like a bad movie, only real.

And then audio clips proved that it was a blatant lie. And it's not about cowardice, it's about blatant disregard for responsibility and the lives of others.
