Chapter Nine: Darkest Outback

Anikus stalked the deck of the Momentum with quiet purpose. He planned the expedition to the Outback with the utmost caring and consideration; after all, he had failed these people enough before.
"Crew! Comrades! I've got a plan!"
He shouted jovially, not realizing just how foreboding these words were. "We won't have to slog through anything, and this plan is one hundred percent Valdich free!"
As tired party members emerged from their cabins--the scholar realized with some embarrassment that he was up first--he offered them the remainder of the pemmican.
"Our landing shall take place at the great city of Tyrael, an area with a strong magical tradition and, frankly, the perfect method of getting us into the forest in one perfectly healthy piece. The birds, friends! The birds!"
As the others closed in for questioning, he stopped and took some bits from his cold, but very filling and quite tasty, breakfast. Pemmican, a mix of meat and berries, was a popular Istrogoth food, easily preservable and attainable in Otavia. He wasn't sure how the others would like it, but it was food, after all!

This he offered to anyone who wanted it. He then rustled around in another pack, and withdrew a sweet-smelling plant that he proceeded to chew after the jerky was gone. "Would anyone else prefer some mint for the mouth? It works for cleaning up after that type of meal," he stated.

"I like it just how it is," said Kaethe, stretching and tossing a handful of pemmican into her mouth. She grimaced, spat it over the side, and quickly took a piece of S'ven's jerky. "Although I admit, a change would be nice."

"Hey, I have some extra fish fillets over here if any wish for some." Thalmir said with a genuine smile.

While chewing on the piece of jerky, Grimlain looked out to the sea. They would be heading to the jungle, it seemed. Not exactly the first place he was wanting to visit. He wondered why they were going there. Obviously they would run into some sort of beast or trap, as it was Anikus leading them after all. Grimlain sighed.
"Why am I here?" Grimlain said, laughing to himself.

Alec couldn't help it, he started laughing out loud, Ria frowned at him, Seriously Alec if I wanted everyone to know I would have said it!
Sorry Ria..... but still! Alec chuckled again and took Ria in his arms and walked around. He saw Thalmir cooking fish.... now that smelled and looked good. Thalmir offered some of his catch and Alec smiled while Ria sat next to Thalmir.
"Oh I am so glad someone had the sense to make something that humans can eat! Thalmir you are awesome! You rank high in my books as life saver." Ria smiled as she took a bite of the fish.
Alec stood off to the side watching everything.... something was off..... again. He couldn't place his finger on it but something was not as it should be. He was on his guard now watching everything.

"I suppose when you are out in the wilderness and by rivers as much as myself, you have to learn to prepare good food." Thalmir said as he chomped down into his own bass fillet.

"Takeshi. Takeshi!"
"Yeah, yeah. I'm awake. What is it, Sakura?"
"He said he had a plan."
"Oh great. That sounds like...fun. Damn fool. Let's eat..."
Takeshi sat up, pulling a satchel closer and pulling out several wrapped bars of so called "trail food".
Sakura grimaced, taking a bar and eating it, chasing it with greenish aloe drink.
"Well, this "trail food" is probably better than anything Anikus comes up with. At least it isn't poisoned. This aloe does help, though..."
"Hmm...It seems like forever...since that day."
"It...does. I hope this...quest...doesn't bring us to a bad end..."
Sakura sat on in silence, then followed Takeshi when he left the cabin.

As she finished her meal and chewed the satisfying mint, she remembered what Anikus had planned, something that she had originally ignored, but realizied as she finished off her plate. Listening to the commotion around her, she decided to relax on a chair near everything; the others were mostly bickering about the food and socializing, even the quiet Thalmir was happy and busy eating his fillets.

Oh except Tobias, Arnab thought bitterly, Tobias could rot in hell.

Setting down his plate, he walked over confidently, reaching for the barrel's lid. "It's a person," he whispered. "Probably harmless. Be on your guard, but let us be hospitable."
He tore the barrel's lid away with some force, exposing the suddenly very startled Arnab. Recognizing that she certainly wasn't a threat, he laughed a bit.
"Who do we have here?"

"My name is Arnab..." she said as a few drops of blood streamed slowly down her thumb and wrist as she ignored it.

Out of one of his pouches, he took what appeared to be a gourd with a stopper in the top. From yet another, he pulled a small roll of gauze. "Have a seat, I'll do what I can to make sure it doesn't get infected."

"I'm sorry." she said, placing her hands on either side of the barrel, hoisting herself out of it. "I was just startled by the cloak and I really don't mean to bleed this much." she stood for a second with her leg caught on the barrel, falling to the deck with a loud thud. Arnab rubbed her bleeding hand in her hair, looking and feeling quite embarrassed as her face flushed. 'Nice going, dummy.' she thought to herself as the blue-eyed man tended to her thumb, her eyes couldn't seem to decide to watch his work or to keep gazing upon his calming visage though.

"A newcomer..." Grimlain said to himself, sighing. "Great... Let us add another to our already overflowing roster. One of these days a decision like this is going to get someone killed."
Grimlain shrugged, giving up hope. He couldn't change anything that happened in a situation like that. His ideals were a little different than everyone else. If he didn't watch his mouth, he could be getting thrown overboard himself.

"Anikus, I would just like to say, that I would rather get along with you then exchange angry glances every few moments. I know, that we both shall have a better time, if we just... forget what happened. I still am not happy with what has happened, and I don't think I ever shall be... but it is better if we get along, for the morale of our comrades at the very least." Thalmir put out his hand for Anikus to shake. A smile came upon his face. "Just... try not to get us into anymore awkward situations, Anikus."

Anikus took the man's hand and shook it firmly, only checking for a split second for movement towards his claymore. Was there--no, there was no way that he was going to forgive him this easily. No way in the Stars grand plan. But the smile seemed genuine, and quickly the scholar realized that peace was valuable enough that any price, even a petty principle like honesty, was enough to pay. He did want it; genuinely, not merely because of politics. Though he could not lie; the increased job security was excellent.
"Regardless, my friends!" he shouted as he stood up. "This newcomer is free to travel with us if she so pleases! God knows we need the manpower, so, listen up. The plan is simple: we're going to fly into the forest and skip the groundslogging stage entirely!"

"Flying!? Seriously? Anikus this sounds worse than your other plans. Not that this is actually saying much in comparison."
Sakura frowned, turning a raised eyebrow on Takeshi, although one could guess of a certain agreement.
