Background: The city-states of Laurasia fought one another for a thousand years, before the advent of recorded history; the continent descended into an eternal chaos of feudal states, broken by periods of timid peace. One day, however, a circle was drawn on a map by King Allistair of the city-state of Irathria; within this circle, there was one rule: no more fighting.
As this circle expanded, so did the Holy Laurasian Empire; despite its being totally unholy, not wholly Laurasian, and hardly being Imperial by any means, it kept these titles and an iron grip on its lands for roughly a century before the perilous alliance burned to the ground in the Collapse, which saw literally every one of the Empire's twenty border provinces declare independence. By this time, the central army of the Empire had grown so incredibly disorganized and dependent on mercenary help that war was not actually declared on those areas that seceded. When Imperial troops were accidentally dispatched, they had a ninety percent desertion rate and proceeded to burn villages under the leadership of the traitor and brigand Arrapatch, who was later lauded for his bravery. History books note the ceremony as being one of the most unenthusiastic ever, including Arrapatch's world-famous "meh" upon being presented with the Order of Courage.
Yeah. It sucked.
Wars and general chaos resumed in the rest of the land, as the rest of the city-states were convinced no superpower could stop them. Sometimes a mad scientist of some stripe froze a city in terror before becoming a maniacal dictator. The Empire lingers as a vestigial remnant of its former self. It is into this quagmire that we step, as a band of adventurers upon the skyways; watch your back!
